Fixstars SSD Has a Massive 13TB Capacity

Fixstars SSD

Want an SSD with lots of storage space? How about 13TB worth? You read that right, and it will be made available by Japanese-based Fixstars Corporation in late February. Unsurprisingly, the company hasnt let on pricing for this monster. The SSD will ship to the United States next month, but if customers can’t afford its expected high price tag, the company announced a 10TB model too (SSD-10000M).

The specifications for both 2.5-inch SSDs show that theyre based on 15nm MLC NAND from Toshiba, and feature sequential read speeds of up to 580MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 520MB/s. Fixstars says this fast transfer is due to a proprietary controller that will enable these speeds throughout the lifetime of the SSD.

As for additional specs, the drives connect via a SATA 3 (6Gb/s) interface, and support TRIM, Garbage Collection, and S.M.A.R.T. They both weigh a beefy 160g and measure a rather thick 100x70x15mm. They also come with a 3-year limited warranty.

Based on the company’s announcement, these drives are meant for 4K/8K video processing, CG/VFX productions, streaming content distribution, object storage, medical imaging, big data analysis, and other applications that depend on “steady sequential access.” Uncompressed 4K video at 60fps can be recorded in 4.3 hours, the company claims.

According to PCWorld, Fixstars hasn’t determined the final price for the 13TB model (SSD-13000M). A spokesperson told the site that a rough estimate would be around $1 per gigabyte, making the cost ultimately around $13,000. That’s enough to purchase two prebuilt high-end gaming PCs.

Fixstars was founded in August 2002 as a company focused on software parallelization and optimization. Some of its clients include L-3 Communications, Boeing, Toshiba, Canon, Olympus, and many others. The company also has offices in Irvine, California and Victoria, BC Canada.

In addition to the 13TB and 10TB models, Fixstars also offers SSDs in 6TB and 3TB capacities. The 6TB model, based on 15nm MLC NAND, reports sequential read speeds of up to 540MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 520MB/s. The 3TB model is based on 19nm MLC NAND and reports read and write speeds of up to 540MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively.

Fixstars is now taking orders for the 13TB and 10TB drives.
